Family Mediation

Understanding Family Mediation

Family mediation is a voluntary and confidential process in which a neutral third party—the mediator—helps family members communicate more effectively to reach mutually acceptable agreements. Family mediation focuses on mutual concerns rather than confrontation, allowing families to determine how they wish to approach family conflict and to guide and teach younger generations to navigate differences among family members with respect.  It shifts the tendency toward superficial communication (“We just never talk about it!”), to a richer, more complex understanding based on curiosity and respect.

The Process of Family Mediation

The family mediation process is designed to be structured yet flexible, ensuring all parties feel heard and respected. It uses an educational approach.  It is not family therapy or a substitute for family therapy.  Family therapy is recommended for acute or chronic mental health concerns.

  1. Initial Consultation & Intake: The mediator meets with the parties (together or separately) to explain the process, assess suitability, and identify the primary issues.
  2. Information Gathering: Both parties will share their concerns and contexts that are most challenging.
  3. Identification of Issues: The mediator helps the family identify how conflict is typically managed and create a plan for teaching conflict resolution skills.
  4. Negotiation and Problem-Solving: This involves learning new skills to communicate well, respect differences, and seek common ground.
  5. Reaching Agreement: Once a consensus is reached, families may co-write their own Memorandum of Understanding for how they wish to proceed as a family with any current or future conflicts to avoid harm, repair harm, and enjoy authentic relationships.
  6. Next Steps:  To be determined by each family as needed.
